Green Hydrogen: Serious prospects for cooperation between Morocco and the Netherlands

Partnership projects between Moroccan and Dutch operators in green hydrogen will soon see the light of day. This is what emerges from the exchanges between the various actors of the ecosystem in Morocco and the Netherlands, during a meeting on the prospects for Moroccan-Dutch cooperation in this field, organized on the sidelines of the “World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition 2022” in Rotterdam.

Moroccan-Dutch cooperation has a bright future ahead of it. For this pioneering country in the field of green hydrogen, the Kingdom has significant potential for the development of this new sector of energy transition. The tone was set on Tuesday during a round table on the prospects for Moroccan-Dutch cooperation in this field, organized on the sidelines of the “World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition 2022” in Rotterdam. This meeting, which brought together actors of economic cooperation and energy from Morocco and the Netherlands, was an opportunity to highlight Morocco’s achievements in renewable energies, as well as to discuss partnerships between public and private organizations of the two countries.

Representatives from the Moroccan Embassy in the Netherlands, Masen, Iresen, Cluster Solaire, ANP, ANRE, OCP, Nareva and Maghreb Steel, on the Moroccan side, and from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economic Cooperation, the Agency Association for Enterprise (RVO), the Dutch Association of Employers in the Technology Sector (FME), the Port of Rotterdam, Vopak, Shell, Impact Energy and Proton Ventures, on the Dutch side, discussed promising avenues of collaboration in green hydrogen.

Partnership projects between Moroccan and Dutch operators in this area will soon see the light of day. “We are happy to be able to welcome countries from different regions to this summit, which this year brings together more than 6,000 participants. The strong participation of the Moroccan delegation bringing together public and private actors aims to facilitate the development of new partnerships between organizations from our two countries,” said Edu Willemse, Senior Energy Advisor at RVO, which oversees a trade promotion program for account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The same goes for RVO’s energy advisor, Claire Hooft Graafland, who underlined the significant prospects for cooperation in renewable energies between Morocco and the Netherlands and Europe in general. “We have great needs for green hydrogen and we cannot ensure all production here in Europe. Morocco has a significant potential in solar and wind power to invest, we believe that the conditions there are favorable for the production of green hydrogen.

We can mutually benefit from cooperation in this area, especially with the willingness of our two countries to work together to achieve a successful energy transition,” she said. For his part, the representative of FME, Jelle Blekxtoon noted that the possibilities are enormous for the production of green hydrogen with better efficiency and lower costs. “Moroccan and Dutch companies have every interest in working together to meet the growing demand for green hydrogen whether in the Netherlands or in other countries. If we work together in the right way, we can go further in this area,” he said.
